Nueva Vida Churches in Havana, Cuba

new life in havana

In January 2016 a team, that included Jon Dennis, Arthur Jackson and Felipe Chamy, traveled to Havana to explore church-planting opportunities in Cuba. They spent three days traveling within Havana and to outlying areas visiting pastors. Plans were discussed to adopt Nueva Vida (led by Alexis Perez) into the Holy Trinity Fellowship/Neopolis family. From that point things moved quickly. A short-term team visited in July 2016 and an official agreement was drafted and entered into in the fall of 2016. March 2017 found us on the ground again in Havana. The progress of our partnership in Cuba has been amazing. Please see excerpts below from Pastor Alexis Perez’s most recent report as to what the Lord is doing in Cuba.

"It is 2018 already and we barely believe it! 2017 has been such an intense and blessed year. We have enjoyed seeing the hand of God working in such an amazing way among us. We are so humble because we could not have imagined how God would already be changing people in our city. I will try to summarize last year in this report.

Nueva Vida Churches: We started 2017 with one congregation in Nuevo Vedado (a neighborhood in Havana); we were aiming and planning to plant a new church in the Vedado area by the university. While at a preaching workshop at Nueva Vida in January 2017, we met a pastor from a Pentecostal church in Old Havana (another neighborhood in Havana) area looking for help. His church had recently been exposed to reformed theology and was changing in many ways. We began conversations along with a lot of prayer. After a number of meetings and seeking advice of others, we understood that God was leading us to take over the church. On October 1st of 2017 we re-launched this church and sent a pastor and two interns there as full-time leaders. In the meantime the church in Nuevo Vedado has continued growing. Due to our limited space we are now moving to two services at the end of January.

Nueva Vida Ministries: Nueva Vida Ministries began in 2015 with “Havana Plan,” an internship program that trains people who aspire to full-time ministry or who aim to improve their skills in Bible teaching and preaching. We have 27 people attending our program! By God’s grace we’re equipping five interns, two pastors from other churches and church leaders from six different churches. It brings us great joy to see how seriously these people are taking the teaching and preaching of the Word of God and to see them make progress each week!

Prayer Requests: For Nueva Vida and Havana, Cuba! Pray for the pastors at Nueva Vida as we continue looking for wisdom to improve  our organization and to serve God in our city. Pray for the two congregations we have in Havana. That we stay faithful to God and His Word as we seek to reach our community. Pray for the core group that is meeting every week to start the university program that is the next step to plant the new congregation by the university. Pray for God to provide the funds to buy the property in Old Havana. Pray for protection over the pastors and their families in Nueva Vida."
